Standards agency’s new MOT reminder service will help cut the number of unsafe vehicles on the road by making car drivers aware of the date of their car’s test

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has launched a new ‘ Get MOT reminders ’ service using GOV.UK Notify to help reduce the number of overdue MOT tests.

The web based platform allows DVSA to send text messages and emails to car owners with overdue MOT.

Research carried out by DVSA shows that around 28% of cars, at any one time, are overdue for a MOT, with three-quarters of them being late simply because their owners had forgotten the date.

Drivers who sign up to ‘Get an Annual MOT reminder’ will receive via GOV.UK Notify the first email or text message four weeks before the MOT is due and a second one two weeks beforehand.

GOV.UK Notify is part of the ‘Government as a Platform’ (GaaP) set of shared components, service designs, platforms, data and hosting and can be used by any government department or local authority to contact their customers.  There are templates to help organisations focus on the tasks they need to complete. Users don’t need to have any technical knowledge and can track the performance of their messages, whether they’re sent manually or electronically.

Ashley Stephens, Government as a Platform programme director for the Government Digital Service (GDS) said, “Government as a Platform was created to provide tools, guidance and digital components that solve common problems once - so that service teams across government don't have to tackle the same problems repeatedly. This will help save them time and money in the future.

“The work DVSA has done to integrate GOV.UK Notify into their service is a great example of cross-government collaboration and one that speaks to the value of the Government as a Platform approach”, Stephens said.

DVSA’s director of digital services and technology, James Munson said, “DVSA is committed to helping people keep their vehicles safe to drive and the new MOT reminder service will help cut the number of unsafe vehicles on the road by making car drivers aware of the date of their cars’ MOT.

“GOV.UK Notify is the new way we can use digital systems to easily contact people and give them the information they need, when they need it”, Munson said.

DVSA’s MOT Service Manager Neil Barlow said, “This is the first time DVSA has used the GOV.UK Notify service to contact customers. We hope that ‘Get MOT reminders’ will be a useful tool to help car drivers plan when they need to take their car for testing”.
