Six month extension for framework officially confirmed by government; updates on status of efforts to launch G-Cloud 8 expected at later date

The Government Digital Service (GDS) has announced it will extend the availability of the sixth iteration of G-Cloud for six months as work continues around finalising the future shape of the procurement framework.

In a blog post released today, it was announced that G-Cloud 6 will remain available via the Digital Marketplace platform until August 1 alongside the seventh iteration of the framework to allow users to acquire services from both mechanisms.

G-Cloud 6 had originally been expected to remain open until the launch of the eighth version of the framework that was intended to go live early this year.

However, as a means to ensure overlap between successive frameworks, the Digital Marketplace team had previously intimated that G-Cloud 6 may remain available beyond the original termination date of this month.

With the previous iteration of the framework set to be available until August, no details were given in regards to when G-Cloud 8 may now be launched.

"We'll notify all G-Cloud suppliers by email when we have more information about G-Cloud 8," said the blog post.

G-Cloud 7 went live on the Digital Marketplace in late November as part of a wider Cabinet Office push to set up a number of additional frameworks to try and better streamline procurement of technology-focused services.

Based on the latest official figures on the framework, total spending through G-Cloud since its launch in 2012 was found to total £903.8m as of November last year.

Of this total amount, £459m spent through the framework, which is used to acquire commodity cloud services, has gone to SMEs. This figure represents 51% of all G-Cloud sales in terms of value.
