Defence Equipment & Support seeks IT Operations Director

£95k role will be responsible for supporting the CIO on setting up and running IM&T governance


Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) is looking for an IT Operations Director in Bristol to support the ownership of IT policy, processes, procedures and tools of the information management and Information technology (IM&IT) function.

DE&S manages a range of projects to deliver equipment and support to the UK’s Armed Forces, employs around 12,000 civilian and military staff to deliver an equipment programme, spending £157bn over a 10 year period.

DE&S’ annual operating costs for 2016/2017 were £1.1bn and it delivers a £13.9bn equipment programme split between equipment support, material services (£7.7bn) and new equipment procurement (£6.2bn).

The IM & IT function in DE&S aims to deliver trusted business centred information services and to lead on the provision of information management, technology, assurance and cyber capabilities, to effectively enable DE&S to deliver its strategic business outcomes.

DE&S says it is currently moving through a vast transformational programme as a newly initiated balanced matrix organisation where functional management drives strategic objectives. DE&S says it is looking for a candidate who will be able to take ownership and creatively lead on the continuous improvement, development and innovation of the IM&IT function.

It says the position is critical for the successful deployment of staff in the new matrix structure and plays a fundamental role in ensuring the right resources are available to support effective delivery. It takes professional responsibility for the 470 IT employees who are currently assigned to the function, defining processes and career paths for them to follow

The IT Operations Director’s duties will include ownership of policy, processes, procedures and tools of the IM&IT function as well as supporting the CIO on running governance that ensures both collaboration and control across DE&S.

Successful candidates will be expected to demonstrate experience of managing multi-million budgets and creating compelling business cases as well as a proven track record of having driven innovation and measurable transformation.

The role reports to Nigel Shaw as the Chief Information Officer and the postholder will be a member of the DE&S Senior Leadership Group.

The salary varies from £70k – £95k dependent on skills and experience.
